Everything you wanted to know about cashmere — Features of the material, characteristics, care
Yözh has gathered everything you should know about this material in this article. Discover its features and ways to care for your favorite pullover cashmere sweaters below.
Cashmere goats have adapted to this harsh climate by developing a double coat: an outer protective layer that shields against water and an undercoat made of ultra-fine hairs that keep the animal warm in temperatures dropping to -40°C. Thanks to this, goats stay warm in winter without overheating in summer.
Major cashmere yarns processing companies are located in Italy and Scotland. The price of the material is exceptionally high due to its scarcity and the intricate production process. On average, a cashmere goat produces only 150 grams of fiber annually, which takes about 300 grams to make a sweater. Therefore, only 6,000 tons of cashmere are produced globally each year, which is a tiny fraction compared to 1.3 million tons of wool.
Quality cashmere is the best, softest, and warmest yarn and an extremely durable material that can easily last decades with proper care. Learn more about the properties of your ideal clothing cashmere sweaters from Yözh.
- Warmth. The insulation ability of cashmere is exceptionally high, making it ideal for the cold seasons. The yarn retains heat without causing overheating.
- Softness. The diameter of cashmere fibers is very small, creating a wonderful texture, the softest among all yarns. Additionally, the density of the fibers is high, so cashmere does not itch and provides a great feeling.
- Lightness. Due to the fiber's characteristics, cashmere sweaters can be lighter while maintaining the ideal body temperature, offering warmth and comfort.
- No Shrinkage. Cashmere threads do not shrink with proper washing and retain their shape over the years.
- Longevity. A quality cashmere sweater can last for decades with proper care. It's common to hear people wearing cashmere sweaters passed down from their grandparents.

Cashmere fibers are shorter and finer than most other yarn types, so following washing instructions is crucial to ensure that a cashmere jumper for men or women lasts for many years.
How to Wash Cashmere?
- Cashmere clothes can be hand-washed or machine-washed. The best option is handwashing in cold water. But if you have a washing machine with a hand washing cycle, set it to a cool temperature (30°C) and a short cycle (no more than 30 minutes).
- Always turn the clothing inside out and never bleach the items.
- Use a mild detergent for delicate washing (pH 8+) or a specialized cashmere washing agent. You can also use baby shampoo to add extra softness and preserve the gentle and fluffy texture.
How to Dry and Iron Cashmere?
- Do not wring out the clothing – remove excess water by gently pressing the item with a towel.
- Lay the clothing on a flat surface and spread it out while still damp. Never hang clothing from cashmere, especially a sweater to dry, as it may stretch and lose its shape.
- Let your cashmere garments air dry at room temperature, avoiding direct sunlight.
- Iron cashmere only at a low temperature, using a cloth between the iron and the garment.
How to Store Cashmere?
- Never hang cashmere clothing on hangers; always fold it during storage, as hanging may cause it to lose its shape.
- If there’s pilling on your jumper, remove it with a special machine. It's best to do this after washing and drying, but never on wet or damp fabric.
- Protect cashmere sweaters from contact with nylon, as it can damage the fibers.
